I chose a recent Live Science article about scientists discovering evidence that the Milky Way may have absorbed a small galaxy called Loki over 10 billion years ago. This found this out by studying metal poor stars near the Milky Way’s disk. The researchers found clues that these stars may have come from this early merger. Ive learned about the Milky Way’s structure, its disk and halo, and how galaxies grow larger over time through collisions with smaller galaxies. The article helped me better understand that the milky way was not formed all at once, but instead developed over billions of years through events. I found it interesting that scientists can study old stars to learn about our galaxy’s past and evolution.
