Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has its first-ever red panda cub, and the internet sensation has just been named.

After a public vote among three names chosen by the zoo’s animal care staff, Pabu beat the other options: Ravi and Tashi. Pabu is a Tibetan word meaning ‘fluffball’ and is a perfect fit for the zoo’s “new fan favorite.”
Red pandas are endangered, so Pabu’s birth marks a significant achievement for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Red Panda Species Survival Plan (SSP), which works to maintain the health and longevity of the red panda population in zoos, according to the zoo.
Pabu was born on June 24 to first-time parents Ponya and Pilot, who were paired through the SSP to support and continue the next generation of red pandas, the zoo said.
Pabu has quickly gained attention on social media, winning hearts across the region. His presence at the zoo is important for both fans and his species, according to the zoo.
Pabu has plenty ahead of him, and he will continue to receive behind-the-scenes care as he prepares to join his parents at the Natt Family Red Panda Habitat. Now with a name, Pabu can continue his story and fanbase at the Beardsley Zoo.
