A 16-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after she was struck by a driver in a hit-and-run crash in Hartford while she was on her way to a bus stop last Tuesday.
The crash happened at the intersection of New Britain Avenue and Zion Street. Hartford police said they’re searching for a red Nissan Maxima with license plates registered to a different vehicle. Hartford police did not release the plate’s numbers due to it being a license plate on a vehicle it was not initially registered to.
Dash camera video from a nearby vehicle shows Evallice Torres crossing the intersection shortly before she was struck.
Her father, Juan Torres, said it was hard to watch what happened to his daughter.
“Just very difficult to see that and just for someone to drive off, just very heartless and cold-blooded,” Torres said.
The video appears to show the car stopping briefly after the crash. Torres said his son ran after the vehicle and recorded its license plate.
“My son happened to run after the car and at least record the plate. Once the fire department started coming out here, the car drove off,” Torres said.
Video also shows people coming to the teenager’s aid before firefighters arrived and took her to the hospital.
Torres said the dash camera footage could prove important to the investigation.
“If it wasn’t for that, we don’t even know what happened. So I’m very grateful for that,” Torres said.
The crash is also raising questions about pedestrian safety at the intersection. There is a button pedestrians can press in order to cross, but no crosswalk light telling them when to do so.
Christopher Pandeiguana, who frequents the area, said adding those lights could help pedestrians who are unsure when it is safe to cross.
“People that are unsure, then yeah, they should add those everywhere, like that’s most reasonable,” Pandeiguana said.
The City of Hartford said the intersection is not an area where it has seen many crashes recently. However, following last week’s crash, the city said the intersection is now on a high-priority list for review for potential safety upgrades.
“I can’t imagine just kids trying to get to school just crossing the street. Probably need to do a little better with these areas with making it safer for crossing for sure,” Torres said.
Torres said his daughter is recovering from broken bones and will need rehabilitation. He also had a message for the driver police are searching for.
“You can’t hide when you do stuff like this, you will get caught,” Torres said.
