National Night Out connects local police with families in a positive, safe space
Дата публикации: 04-08-2026 21:33:12

Police departments across the state and county invited families for the annual National Night Out on Tuesday.
In Middletown, kids got a firsthand look at all the tools police use to stop crime. Officers don’t get a chance to do this on the job, but at National Night Out, they want kids to get up close and personal.
“You can’t measure how rewarding it is for the kids and the families to come here and just see us in a different light,” Middletown Police Captain Aura Smith said.
Middletown police aim to make the event a place to learn about first responders and to have clean fun.
Mom Megan DeSorbo made sure her kids met and spoke to officers.
“I do think it’s good to build trust very young, especially this day and age,” she said.
In Hartford, officers hope community events inspire kids to one day become police officers and protect the community they grew up in.
“We don’t want them to be scared of us,” Hartford Police Deputy Chief Gabriel Laureano said. “We also want them to look at us and strive and say, I want to do that job. I want to help my community. I want to be out there when people need me.”
The Hartford Cadets are on their way to joining the force. Their duty at Hartford’s south end National Night Out was to serve snacks, but they hope to serve Hartford neighborhoods in the future.
“I just want to do more for my community,” said Hartford Cadet Andrew Stafford. “From a young age, I’ve wanted to help people.”
Hartford has the largest police department in the state. Hyacinth Yennie, one of the event’s organizers, argues that a safe city includes police.
“Somebody says that we don’t care about our police officers; of course we love our police officers,” she said. “We are in partnership because if you’re not in partnership, nothing works.”
“I think it’s a way to break down barriers and a way to break down the stigma,” Waterbury Police Sergeant Joseph Morais said.
