Well, it wasn’t exactly born out of thin air. The shoe takes the classic Blazer and lays it back a bit (the name itself is a portmanteau of “Blazer” and “lazy”). The sneaker drew instant comparisons to Vans with its clean lines, canvas construction and double-taped midsole.

The first time around, Nike played it somewhat safe with the colorways, dropping the Blazy in decidedly traditional black and white. For its follow-up, however, the Vans doppelganger veers back into Nike territory.

Now, it gets a new colorway that’s decidedly more Nike.NikeBlazering new trails

Before the Air Jordan and Dunk helped define Nike’s basketball legacy in the mid-’80s, the Swoosh had already spent more than a decade trying to carve out a place on the hardwood.

One of its earliest efforts was the Blazer, a high-top basketball sneaker introduced in 1972 and named after the Portland Trail Blazers, the relatively new NBA franchise in the brand’s backyard. At a time when Converse and Adidas largely ruled the category, the Blazer defined Nike’s early push into basketball footwear.

Despite its relatively straightforward construction, the shoe managed to find popularity, even landing on the feet of NBA stars like George Gervin. But its second act would ultimately prove even more enduring.

During the 1980s and ’90s, skateboarders began adopting the Blazer for its sturdy build and grippy sole, giving the former basketball shoe an entirely new identity. Nike eventually embraced the crossover, bringing the silhouette into its dedicated SB skateboarding collection.

The Blazy helps join all of the silhouette’s history into one simplified aesthetic. Its most distinct attribute is the Swoosh, which is stretched out to the point of near-omission on the upper. The “reclining” shoe is decidedly more vintage-looking than most of Nike’s latest archival releases.

Well-red

Varsity Red is one of Nike’s most recognizable and historically significant colors, with roots in the company’s ‘80s basketball and running shoes. Although it’s often associated with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, its history extends well beyond the Jordan line.

Here, the Blazy lands in the signature colorway. The new hue allows for some tonal nuance on the upper. For instance, the suede on the eyestays, toe box and heel get a slightly darker shade of red than what’s used for the canvas elsewhere.

White contrast stitching traces the laid-back Swoosh and also the eyestays, matching the midsole below. If you weren’t convinced the Blazy could possibly be Nike’s next lifestyle classic, this variant should have you sold.

Price and availability

The Blazy in Varsity Red is set to drop on October 15 at 10 a.m. ET from Nike’s SNKRS app. It’s priced at $95.
