Like a lot of ‘70s and ‘80s basketball shoes, models like the Blazer, Dunk and Air Jordan 1 were appropriated by the skating scene for their flexibility and comfort. But in the ‘90s, when Nike actually tried to crack the skateboarding market with purpose-built sneakers, it largely failed.

In the early aughts, the sportswear brand decided to change its approach. With creative visionary Sandy Bodecker in charge, Nike launched its SB label. But instead of simply engineering another shoe and trying to sell it to skateboarders, SB concentrated on skate shops, riders and skate culture itself.

The brand had a major breakthrough with the SB Dunk, retooling the ‘80s court shoe. But it wasn’t until 2005 that Nike teamed up with skate star Paul Rodriguez on the line’s first-ever signature shoe.

Now, after over two decades of success, the Paul Rodriguez Zoom Air Low is landing one of its most refined iterations ever.

Tan you dig it?

For its latest fall-ready variant, Nike wraps the entire P-Rod 1 in “Ale Brown,” making this arguably the most completely tonal version we’ve ever seen of the shoe.

Material contrast replaces color contrast, with plush suede against a textured, mesh-like Swoosh and tongue. The heel also gets defined by its chainlink-patterned sidewalls with quilted stitching. Likewise, the midsole and outsole match in the same tan hue.

With a wheat colorway like this, it’s easy to draw comparisons to Timberland’s work boots. But, as Rodriguez confirmed in a live stream last year, he and Nike had something else in mind.

One of P-Rod’s biggest influences is UK-based skater Tom Penny, who was known for wearing éS Accel board shoes. “Some of my favorite footage of [Penny] was when we would skate in those brown suede Accels back in the day,” says Rodriguez.

Structurally, this is the same P-Rod 1 we’ve seen for years. You still get the round toe, cupsole, visible Zoom Air unit in the heel and impact plate underfoot, just like before.

Price and availability

After a year of waiting, the Paul Rodriguez Zoom Air Low in “Ale Brown” is finally dropping October 13 at 10 a.m. ET from Nike’s SNKRS app. It’s priced at $130.
