The last time I crossed paths with MetMo, the burgeoning British workshop was crowdfunding for the Pocket Grip, a potentially game-changing 5-in-1 clamping machine inspired by a double-ended parallel wrench with a patent filing from 1912.
When the smoke cleared, it had raised $1,024,727, blasting past their modest $13,253 goal with the help of 3,593 backers.
The Precision Grip comes in three variants: stainless steel, aluminum and titanium.MetMoSo I can’t exactly blame them for returning to the well with its next big Kickstarter campaign, which leans on that same early-20th-century locking wrench design.
And what do you know? The equally fascinating Precision Grip is nearing the million-dollar mark with three weeks still to go.
In the simplest, most straightforward way, this GIF shows what makes the Precision Grip superior to standard tweezers.MetMoThe most obvious difference between the two products is a matter of scale; while the original product can grip larger objects, MetMo bills its follow-up as “the most over-engineered precision locking tweezers on the planet.”
As you can probably deduce, it’s optimized for grasping and holding really small items with a rare combination of both strength and TLC. (It can also firmly grip screws for what they call “bodging,” but sure looks like basic screwdriving to me.)
The knurled dial mechanism at the heart of the tool is what enables you to set the jaws to just the right width for the job at hand.MetMoThat makes it a dream for watchmakers, model builders and electronics pros, but there’s also loads of appeal for serious, often frustrated general tinkerers and DIYers.
The not-at-all secret sauce is, of course, one J. Anderson’s original 114-year-old locking wrench design, trimmed down into a slimmer sprung knurled dial mechanism that opens and closes the tweezer jaws and locks them, enabling you to gently but firmly grip any small object.
Close examination reveals just how precisely engineered and machined the tools themselves are.MetMoC.C. Weiss at New Atlas aptly compares it to a see-saw, as it has two heads, with the locking dial precisely calibrating the squeeze on both ends.
There are hardened fine-point jaws on one end for small pieces, while the other end bears a set of broader, silicone-lined bent-tip tweezers for working with larger and more delicate items.
Yet another of the many, many GIFs on the Kickstarter page demonstrating how awesome this thing is for tackling small, painstaking tasks. MetMoThere’s also a reverse grip for holding things like rings, and you can also disengage the locking element and use the spring-loaded tips more like non-lockable tweezers, depending on the task at hand.
But that’s not all: the Precision Grip also packs a wire clamp and bending vise within its body, and you can even swap the implements with alternatives, including needle-nose jaws, finder bent jaws, jaws with external texture grips or custom sets you 3D-print for even more niche uses.
The bonus wire-bending capability in action.MetMoSweetening the deal, MetMo offers a 200-year guarantee and offers a number of build options with increasing capability to match their higher price points: 2.5-ounce (70-g) hard-anodized black aerospace-grade aluminum model with stainless steel jaws; 4-ounce (115-g) surgical-grade stainless steel model; and 2.9-ounce Grade 5 titanium version, which is positioned as the Goldilocks option with the optimal blend of weight and strength.
Availability and pricingThe Early Bird price for the aforementioned Black Precision Grip is £89 (about $118), and the numbers just go up from there.
Don’t snooze if you are interested, as at the time of this writing, there are just 12 of that model left (out of 1,750) and quantities are equally limited with the pricier builds.
Estimated delivery is June 2027.
