A guest on This Morning told how she unexpectedly gave birth having not known she was pregnant - after suffering what she believed were period pains.

Katie Brown, a dancer, appeared on the ITV show on Thursday (April 2), along with her mother.

Prior to giving birth to newborn son William, Katie, 27, had no idea she had been pregnant - having continued to menstruate normally.

She told hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary: 'I woke up and I thought, "Oh, I'm having period pains", so I went and got some paracetamol and then I couldn't sit down.'

Katie continued: 'It got to about seven o'clock, and I thought, 'I can't do this anymore, I'm going to have to go to A&E'.

'So, I told my mum, and then my mum came in and thought it was appendicitis.'

Katie Brown, a dancer, appeared on the ITV show on Thursday (April 2), to tell her remarkable story

Appearing alongside her mother, Katie recounted giving birth to newborn son William - having not known she was pregnant

Given she was unaware of the pregnancy, Katie had not considered the pains were contractions.

From there, she got in touch with emergency services, who informed her they wouldn't be able to reach her for another four hours.

Although upon hearing her distress, they managed a fast turnaround to arrive by 9.30am that morning.

Katie added: 'They walked me out on the street and then I dropped to my hands and knees and he was born at twenty to 10. I'm on the street.'

Meanwhile, Katie's mother revealed how she had caught her grandson's head as he emerged.

Addressing whether she had realised she was going in labour, Katie said: 'No, I genuinely thought I was just having a massive poo, I thought something had happened to my bowels.'

The baby, William - named after her father - is Katie's second child, meaning she is familiar with the experiences associated with pregnancy and childbirth.

And when previously pregnant with her daughter, she had experienced all the normal symptoms.

Dr. Zoe Williams, who also appeared on the sofa, clarified what Katie experienced is known as a cryptic pregnancy.

She elaborated: 'It actually happens, for every 2,500 pregnancies, you get a cryptic pregnancy.

'I wouldn't call it common - [but] common enough to be quite well researched and understood.

Dr. Zoe Williams also appeared on the programme to give more context about what Katie had experienced

'There are a number of reasons and Katie actually had multiple of them.'

Dr. Zoe went on: 'Think about how you find out you're pregnant. Your periods stop.

'Well, Katie was taking the combined oral contraceptive pill, so every time she had the pill free window - the seven days - she had a withdrawal bleed.

'So she thought she was still having periods.'
