Dermot O'Leary made a sassy jibe about being overshadowed by his fellow This Morning hosts at the National Television Awards on Wednesday - because they were 'still talking' when he tried to say a few words during the acceptance speech.

The hit ITV programme won the NTA for Daytime at the glittering London event - marking a comeback after two years of missing the accolade.

When their win was announced, hosts Dermot, Alison Hammond, Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley took to the stage, along with a throng of presenters, experts and other contributors.

Alison, 50, began to make an acceptance speech, which Dermot later said was understandable, as no one else stepped up to the microphone.

She said: 'Oh my goodness, natural order has been restored. Can we just say a massive thank you to each and every person who voted for This Morning, we are so overwhelmed.'

Alison continued: 'This award means so much, we've been humbled for the last two years, we haven't won this award. 

'We have been humbled, we don't take it lightly that we won this award, we are so, so grateful.'

She praised the behind-the-camera crew, and credited the show's camera operators, visual mixers, directors, researchers and editors.

All the while, an expectant Dermot was hovering awkwardly over the mic, and looked like he might step in to say a word.

But Alison, who credited the 'amazing legend that is Dermot O'Leary' then handed over to Ben.

Dutifully waiting his turn, Dermot was jilted yet again when Ben passed the mic to Cat, who said a few words before the acceptance concluded and the presenter had missed his chance.

Dermot revealed his disappointment on Friday's installment of This Morning, telling audiences that while Alison made her speech, he hadn't managed to get a word in.

'You made a lovely speech,' he told Alison on the show. 'And Ben did - and Cat said some words as well.'

Alison burst out laughing as Dermot continued bitterly: 'I inhaled to speak, then [Alison started], and I thought "No she's still talking, she's still talking" then Ben...'

'But where better to say a few words than right here on This Morning,' Alison said, stepping out of frame to give Dermot the floor.

Before he could begin, the theme song blared over him, in a jokey rehashing of Wednesday night's blunder.

Following the booze-filled ceremony, Cat and Ben broke with a major TV tradition after finally winning.

For years former hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield had a tradition of partying hard when the show scooped the award - and would arrive for filming the next day still wearing their red carpet attire, nursing brutal hangovers.

It was the first win for current presenters Cat and Ben, who opted to ditch the morning-after tradition - despite showing very drunken clips from the after party at the beginning of the show.

Taking to the set on Thursday morning, Cat traded her flowing green evening gown for a red chiffon midi dress, while Ben ditched the tailored suit in favour of a polo shirt and chinos.

The decision to abandon the tradition of wearing last night's clothes may have disappointed This Morning's former editor Martin Frizell - who stepped down from the role earlier this year to look after his wife Fiona Phillips as she battles early onset dementia.

Taking to Instagram ahead of the ceremony yesterday, Martin wrote: 'Fingers crossed for my great team from This Morning at tonight's NTAs.

'Remember there's a tradition to uphold if you win!'
