A 26-year-old Las Vegas man is in custody in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a skateboarder last month in the northwest Las Vegas Valley.

Elijah Malone was arrested Thursday and being held at the Clark County Detention Center on a felony count of duty to stop at the scene of an accident, according to a Metropolitan Police Department release and Las Vegas Justice Court records.

Ivan Aguilera, 28, was found dead June 5 on the roadside of North Oso Blanca Road, just north of West Montecito Pointe Drive. Police said at the time a Ram pickup struck Aguilera while he was riding a skateboard.

Aguilera’s brother, Carlos Aguilera Jr., told the Las Vegas Review-Journal Thursday that the arrest wouldn’t bring back his brother, but said “it’s at least one step closer to justice.”

“Maybe my brother was living and possibly had the chance to live, but my brother didn’t get that from the person that hit him,” Aguilera Jr. said. “One life was taken, but two lives are being destroyed because of this.”

Aguilera Jr. said he hopes the legal process will bring him and his family closure about how the collision occurred and why Malone allegedly drove away from the scene.

Malone is scheduled to appear in court Friday at the Regional Justice Center. Aguilera Jr. said his family is planning to attend the initial appearance to be a voice for his dead brother.

“Hopefully this guy doesn’t get the chance to get bailed out and can stay in there until justice can be made,” Aguilera Jr. said.
