For those that prefer waiting until the first bug-fix/point release before upgrading to a major new feature series, GCC 16.2 is being planned for an early August release for delivering back-ported bug fixes to the GCC 16 compiler.

GCC 16.1 released at the end of April as the first stable version in the GCC 16 series. GCC 16 introduced initial AMD Zen 6 "znver6" support, the Algol 68 language front-end, HTML output support for diagnostics, Arm AGI CPU support, C++20 standard by default, and many other new features and improvements.

The latest GCC status report was published today to outline the GCC 16.2 release plans. The current thinking is to release a GCC 16.2 release candidate on 31 July and then hopefully GCC 16.2.0 will be ready for release on 7 August barring any last minute problems. Thus there is just over one month to go to accumulate any additional fixes.

GCC 16.2 is notable in that it should be the compiler version used by default on the likes of Ubuntu 26.10, Fedora 45, and others. There will also be some important fixes in tow such as Intel removing AMX-TF32 from Diamond Rapids and thus the -march=diamondrapids handling needs to be updated.
