Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden has revealed how tough his split from co-star Charley Webb was. The actor, 46, married his ITV co-star in 2018, and have three sons together.
But after 15 years of dating, Charley called quits on the pair in 2023 and moved in with close pal Sheridan Smith. Matthew has now revealed how the decision took its toll on him.
At the time, he made it clear the decision was not his. But he has revealed how the pair have dealt with co-parenting, claiming they have found a rhythm to make it work.
He admits the duo have been banking on the support of their parents too, who he labelled "very, very patient". Matthew quit his role as David Metcalfe shortly after their split and landed a gig on rival soap Hollyoaks. He has took on the role of Jonah, with the demanding schedule leaving him with a two-hour commute.
But he says it's all hands on deck, with his new partner Heather Scott-Martin also helping out. Speaking to The Sun, he said: "I’m often around and when I’m around I can help Charley out. When she’s around, she can help me out."
But he admits it hasn't always been this smooth sailing. Speaking previously about the pair's divorce, he said: It was Charley’s decision. Charley decided she wanted to separate.
“It was hard, it was a hard time for me. I had the kids full time at that time because Charley was out on tour and then out of the blue I got this news that she wanted to separate.
“It was a very very tough time. It was the fact that the kids were quite young and it wasn’t only a couple of years ago. That was a concern to me. We had to move onwards.”
Earlier this year, he told the Mirror of the rule he and Charley have for their boys, Buster, 16, Bowie, 10, and six-year-old Ace. “You do just have to learn a lot as you go," he said.
"It’s all new. I think everyone’s different, so you’ve got to create your own path.” With that in mind, Matthew isn’t sure what advice he could give to parents going through a break-up except for one thing. He says, “The most important thing is to think of the children. As long as they’re happy and thriving, then I think you’ve done a good job.”
He added: "The little one is only six, so he does have to fight his own little corner. But the younger two have always looked up to Buster.”
