E-scooter rider critically injured by trailer wheel that detached on Route 41

A man was critically injured while riding an e-scooter when he was struck by a wheel that detached from a trailer that was being towed by a truck on a busy north suburban highway on Monday, police said.
Preliminary investigation suggests a 60-year-old man from Park City, Illinois, was riding an electric scooter northbound on the shoulder of Route 41 in Gurnee around 5:25 p.m. on Monday when he was struck by a wheel that detached from a trailer carrying a front loader that was being pulled by a Ford F-450, authorities said.
The driver of the Ford F-450, a 45-year-old man from Waukegan, was also heading northbound on Route 41 when both the wheel that struck the scooter rider and another wheel detached from the trailer.
The scooter rider suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition, authorities said.
The driver of the Ford F-450 was not injured and remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, police said.
The Major Crash Assistance Team is assisting the Gurnee Police Department with an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Anyone who potentially captured the incident on a dash camera is asked to contact the Gurnee Police Department.
