A McHenry County Judge has ordered a suspect in a fatal boat crash on the Fox River held pretrial as he faces homicide charges.
According to authorities, Richard M. Stevenson will remain incarcerated following the Saturday crash that led to the death of an unidentified woman.
In court documents read before lawyers on Monday, prosecutors described Stevenson’s actions on Saturday as an alcohol-fueled trip down the river at speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour.
They say the 45-year-old Lisle resident was at the wheel of a high-powered pontoon boat powered by three outboard motors when it struck another boat at a dock. The pontoon allegedly went up and over the other boat, striking a woman onboard and severing her head.
Prosecutors called Stevenson a “ticking time bomb that went off last Saturday.”
They also said witnesses described how he had picked up a bucket of Fireball whisky bottles and was drinking them as he drove. He allegedly stopped later at a bar for two more shots.
They say that after the crash, Stevenson admitted to another witness that he was drinking and that his life was over. He stayed on the scene and was later taken to a hospital where he allegedly refused blood and urine tests, according to prosecutors.
Stevenson is now facing one count of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated driving. According to court records, he has a long criminal history dating back more than 20 years, including two previous DUI convictions,three reckless driving convictions, three fleeing and eluding police convictions and four misdemeanor speeding convictions.
Judge Cynthia Lamb said she considered the Illinois SAFE-T Act, which allows for pre-trial release when it is possible, but she added “GPS will not make the community safe from this defendant” before ordering that he be held in the McHenry County Jail.
Stevenson’s next court date is August 5.
