The body of the contractor who has been missing in a Downers Grove storm drain since severe storms trapped him and another crew member in the sewer on Monday was recovered during a search the following day, officials said.
The missing contractor, who has not been identified publicly, was recovered around 5 p.m. on Tuesday from the storm sewer near Washington Street and was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was initially believed that the recovery mission was wrapping up for the day around 4:30 p.m. without locating the man, however, authorities announced hours later that his body had been found.
The man’s cause and manner of death will be determined by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office, authorities said.
The other contractor was rescued on Monday approximately 200 feet from where the crews entered the sewer and was transported to a local hospital in good condition.
Rescue operations transitioned to a recovery operation as of Monday evening, authorities said, as water conditions within the sewer made additional search efforts “extremely dangerous.” The search continued overnight and into Tuesday.
Footage captured during the search on Monday appeared to show multiple people being pulled from the storm drain near Washington Curtiss, though it was not clear if those were rescuers or the missing contractors. Some were seen being loaded onto stretchers.

The village said the contractors were part of a team working on a pipe rehabilitation project for them since 2025 through Houston-based company Vortex Lining Systems.
“We are devastated by the loss of our team member following an unexpected major rain event, and are doing everything we can to support his family during this incredibly difficult time,” Vortex Companies said in a statement.
Both contractors were members of Laborers Union Local 68, the union confirmed.
“The Village’s thoughts are with the crew members, their families and everyone at Vortex Lining Systems during this incredibly difficult time,” the village said in a statement.
The intense storms that trapped the two contractors brought tornado warnings, hail and damaging winds to the Chicago area and prompted tornado warnings in parts of DuPage, Cook and Will counties in Illinois, as well as in Lake and Porter counties in Indiana.
No additional information was immediately available.
