A driver led Illinois State Police on a dangerous chase Tuesday, traveling erratically on major expressways in Chicago’s south suburbs and through a McDonald’s drive-through as it nearly hit several vehicles — and all with children inside.
Illinois State Police told NBC Chicago troopers had located a vehicle wanted in an earlier shooting near the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Pulaski in suburban Matteson on Tuesday morning.
The troopers then tried to initiate a traffic stop, and the vehicle fled.
NBC’s Sky 5 helicopter witnessed the scene as a wanted vehicle began driving away from officers at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic on U.S. 30 near Interstate 57 before traveling northbound on I-57 south of I-80. The vehicle became more erratic the farther north it traveled.
Eventually, the driver exited at Sibley Boulevard, made a sharp turn into a McDonald’s drive-through, nearly striking some cars as it continued to drive erratically before crashing at 148th and Cooper near Harvey.
The driver got out of the vehicle and fled the scene before being arrested by responding officers.
Two children that were in the car were taken into protective custody by police. Neither was harmed in the crash, according to authorities.
No further information on the crash was immediately available.
