MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Everything was going just fine for Baylor Wednesday — until it wasn't.
The Red Raiders held the lead against Lipscomb for six innings until a run explosion in the bottom of the sixth reversed the fortunes for the Mustangs, who held off Baylor the rest of the way and eliminated the Raiders by a score of 11-9.
The Raiders finished the season with a record of 26-7.
“It's baseball. It's a tough game. You've gotta be borderline psychotic to play and keep showing up every day,” said Baylor head coach Greg Ellie. “They weren't really hitting us too hard. Their balls were just falling. Our guys were hitting the ball, but just right at them. It was a battle of two really good teams, it just wasn't our day. It happens.”
The Red Raiders started the day hot in the first inning as Blake Lundy blasted a three run home run over the high over the left-field fence.
The runs came again in the top of the second with as Emerson Morris singled and later scored to make it 4-0. Baylor loaded the bases with two outs and Jack Schuman took one for the team scoring Knox Johnson.
The bottom of the inning saw Lipscomb's Reid Bostic cut it to 5-3 with a two run dinger.
The Raiders added two more in the fourth on a two run rip that cleared the left-center field fence on Lundy's second round tripper of the day upping the gap to 7-2.
The Mustangs recovered one run in the lower half of the fifth on a bases loaded walk to make it a 7-3 game.
Then came the bottom of the sixth.
Lipscomb sent 12 batters to the plate, picked up nine hits including two doubles causing a pair of pitching changes by the Raiders. When the dust cleared, the Mustangs had crossed home eight times to forge an 11-7 lead.
The Raiders fought back in the top of the seventh with a two run shot over the left-field fence off the bat of Morris to cut the gap to 11-9.
From there the Mustangs sat the Raiders down in order to stay alive.
The game came to a close just s the stadium was cleared due to severe weather entering the area.
