How to Show Up in AI Search in 2026, According to an SEO Expert

Дата публикации: 07-07-2026 10:01:00

We know that online search has changed, and along with it, how we approach SEO for small businesses. What many small business owners don’t know is that search visibility is no longer about just optimizing for search engines. It’s about optimizing for new search behavior.Accurate brand positioning is critical. It’s a fundamental shift in how brands need to show up in AI-search decision journeys. That starts with your buyer journey, how AI search engines interpret your business, and the best practices to ensure your content is clearly structured. As an SEO expert of more than 13 years, this is what I’m implementing in client projects right now, and what I’d recommend to any business owner who wants to show up in AI search.

Check Your AI Visibility

Why does AI search matter for small businesses?Consumers are now using AI models to ask questions and get informed before they ever seek out a service provider. Once an AI search engine understands what a searcher needs, it makes a recommendation. To be that recommendation, AI needs to understand what you offer and that your business can be trusted.

How to find out what AI is saying about youThe first step to improving how you appear in AI search is understanding how AI search engines currently interpret your business—they may not see your website or brand as clearly as you think. You can do this natively in Squarespace with the built-in AI Visibility tool, which shares a personalized report, identifies the gaps, and makes recommendations for next steps. The report shows whether you’re being mentioned in ChatGPT answers, which competitors are showing up in responses where you aren’t, and where there are gaps in how AI describes your business. You can also monitor changes over time, so as you implement the recommendations in this article, you can determine if they’re moving the needle.

Your website is the foundationSquarespace sites already come with clean code and the SEO features necessary to build a website that has sound technical optimization. With Squarespace, you have full control over features such as: Meta data (titles and page descriptions) URL structure (you can customize a URL) Redirects (ability to redirect an old page URL to a new one to avoid a “broken URL” error in Google)Alt descriptions for images (descriptive image text for screen readers and Google) and much moreThat said, technical soundness alone won’t get you recommended. The gap between a solid site and one AI can describe and recommend is usually about content clarity, not code. There are two critical mistakes that I see small business owners make around structure and content that can derail AI search optimization:The structure of your contentSearch engines read your website like an outline. One mistake many small businesses make is using heading and font styles based on “visual preferences” instead of structured content. Even strong copy falls flat if the structure underneath it sends mixed signals.

The fix:Place your content in a logical, linear structure. If something needs to look visually different, use Squarespace’s built-in style options to change the global font size and style options across the site.Consider your site’s content hierarchy. The H1 (heading 1) serves as a page title. There should only be one per page, and it needs to clearly describe the page and have your primary keyword included. Use H2s as headings for each section, and set your body copy to paragraph style. Search engines read your page structure through those heading tags, and Squarespace handles the code behind the scenes. When you apply the built-in heading styles, you’re telling search engines exactly how your content is organized.Vague copy and contentAI search engines handle most informational content, but when it comes time to recommend a service provider, they will be looking for someone who is the “best fit.” Understanding your buyer journey and leveraging this in your content is key.The fix: Write out all the questions that your prospective buyers ask right before they make a purchase.Note what previous clients or customers have said in testimonials. Think about what your clients ask you on discovery calls. Now you should have clarity about:Who you help (the problems you are solving)What you help them do (the transformation)Industry/location specificityProcess clarity (how you deliver your service)Service clarity (what your service includes)Your website, especially the service pages, should contain content that provides this information.

Answer frequently asked questionsFrequently asked questions (FAQs) offer an opportunity to incorporate content on your website that helps AI search engines understand why they should recommend your brand. AI platforms are trained to answer questions, and FAQs speak directly to that. Plus, it’s a chance to answer the questions that your audience is asking as they get closer to the end of the buyer journey. Focus on one primary service page and your homepage, and write some new FAQs based on what your audience considers right before they buy. This could include pricing ranges, process questions, comparison questions, keywords that reinforce your geographical location, or anything about what sets you apart from competitors.Consider adding links in the FAQs to another service page, blog post, about page, or contact page. This helps build a map for the search engines to better understand how your pages relate to each other.  Your website isn’t your only surfaceOne critical shift when optimizing for AEO SEO is how important industry-related backlinks and trust signals are for getting recommended. This is because AI engines put more weight into third-party reviews, brand mentions, and who else has linked to your site.

Fix #1: ReviewsIt’s important to have testimonials on your website, but you also need testimonials on a third-party platform such as a Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business) or Clutch. If you want to improve local SEO, start with a free Google Business Profile. It’s owned by Google and one of the quickest surfaces to start with. If you are a local business, this is a critical piece of showing up in search, but even if you aren’t local, it’s a great way to start building third-party reviews.Fix #2: Trust signalsAI search engines will recommend businesses they trust. Just like humans, they don’t want to recommend someone that is inexperienced or isn’t a good fit for the service. So they look for the same trust signals that humans look for—experience, social proof, and recommendations by others that already have authority.Be clear on why you should be the one they recommend. Use trust signals in your copy such as “five-star rated,” “in business for 10 years,” "recommended by,” or list any certifications you might have, the number of clients you’ve served, and specific case studies or portfolio projects. You want to make this information clear on your website, but it can also be reiterated across the web on other surfaces.Fix #3: Industry-related backlinksA backlink is when another website links to yours. The more of these you have, the more search engines feel like you’re a trusted, expert source. You can buy backlinks, but it’s much more effective to get “relational” backlinks. Unlinked mentions of your brand across the web also help AI search engines recognize your authority. Showing up in roundups, directories, or industry blogs matters even without a direct link back to your site. Relational backlinks are when someone in your niche or industry links to your site. For example, acquiring a backlink from someone else in your industry that is well-known is going to carry a lot of authority. This builds trust. Search engines are looking for these connections between your website and other websites that are prominent in your industry. These links matter. Make a list of the people you know and see if you have a blog that they might be interested in linking to, if they want to collaborate on a guest post, or if they have a directory that they’d list you in.What’s good for your reader is good for searchWe are in an unprecedented era of human-driven search behavior. It’s not simply the search engines that have shifted; it’s the way your audience is searching for your services.Building an AI SEO framework around the buyer journey with clarity around the solutions you offer and why you are the top expert in your field is what will move the needle as we continue to move forward into the AI search experience. This cohesive message that starts with your website, and reaches all touchpoints across the web, will tell an irrefutable story that AI search engines can’t ignore.

We know that online search has changed, and along with it, how we approach SEO for small businesses. What many small business owners don’t know is that search visibility is no longer about just optimizing for search engines. It’s about optimizing for new search behavior.

Accurate brand positioning is critical.

How to find out what AI is saying about you

The first step to improving how you appear in AI search is understanding how AI search engines currently interpret your business—they may not see your website or brand as clearly as you think.

Your website is the foundation

Squarespace sites already come with clean code and the SEO features necessary to build a website that has sound technical optimization.

With Squarespace, you have full control over features such as:

  • Meta data (titles and page descriptions)

  • URL structure (you can customize a URL)

  • Redirects (ability to redirect an old page URL to a new one to avoid a “broken URL” error in Google)

  • Alt descriptions for images (descriptive image text for screen readers and Google)

  • and much more

That said, technical soundness alone won’t get you recommended. The gap between a solid site and one AI can describe and recommend is usually about content clarity, not code.

There are two critical mistakes that I see small business owners make around structure and content that can derail AI search optimization:

The structure of your content

Search engines read your website like an outline. One mistake many small businesses make is using heading and font styles based on “visual preferences” instead of structured content. Even strong copy falls flat if the structure underneath it sends mixed signals.

The fix:

Place your content in a logical, linear structure. If something needs to look visually different, use Squarespace’s built-in style options to change the global font size and style options across the site.

Consider your site’s content hierarchy.

When you apply the built-in heading styles, you’re telling search engines exactly how your content is organized.

Vague copy and content

AI search engines handle most informational content, but when it comes time to recommend a service provider, they will be looking for someone who is the “best fit.” Understanding your buyer journey and leveraging this in your content is key.

The fix:

  1. Write out all the questions that your prospective buyers ask right before they make a purchase.

  2. Note what previous clients or customers have said in testimonials.

  3. Think about what your clients ask you on discovery calls.

Now you should have clarity about:

  • Who you help (the problems you are solving)

  • What you help them do (the transformation)

  • Industry/location specificity

  • Process clarity (how you deliver your service)

  • Service clarity (what your service includes)

Your website, especially the service pages, should contain content that provides this information.

Answer frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) offer an opportunity to incorporate content on your website that helps AI search engines understand why they should recommend your brand.

This could include pricing ranges, process questions, comparison questions, keywords that reinforce your geographical location, or anything about what sets you apart from competitors.

Consider adding links in the FAQs to another service page, blog post, about page, or contact page. This helps build a map for the search engines to better understand how your pages relate to each other.

Your website isn’t your only surface

One critical shift when optimizing for AEO SEO is how important industry-related backlinks and trust signals are for getting recommended. This is because AI engines put more weight into third-party reviews, brand mentions, and who else has linked to your site.

Fix #1: Reviews

It’s important to have testimonials on your website, but you also need testimonials on a third-party platform such as a Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business) or Clutch.

If you want to improve local SEO, start with a free Google Business Profile. It’s owned by Google and one of the quickest surfaces to start with. If you are a local business, this is a critical piece of showing up in search, but even if you aren’t local, it’s a great way to start building third-party reviews.

Fix #2: Trust signals

AI search engines will recommend businesses they trust. Just like humans, they don’t want to recommend someone that is inexperienced or isn’t a good fit for the service. So they look for the same trust signals that humans look for—experience, social proof, and recommendations by others that already have authority.

Be clear on why you should be the one they recommend. Use trust signals in your copy such as “five-star rated,” “in business for 10 years,” "recommended by,” or list any certifications you might have, the number of clients you’ve served, and specific case studies or portfolio projects.

You want to make this information clear on your website, but it can also be reiterated across the web on other surfaces.

Fix #3: Industry-related backlinks

A backlink is when another website links to yours. The more of these you have, the more search engines feel like you’re a trusted, expert source. You can buy backlinks, but it’s much more effective to get “relational” backlinks. Unlinked mentions of your brand across the web also help AI search engines recognize your authority. These links matter. Make a list of the people you know and see if you have a blog that they might be interested in linking to, if they want to collaborate on a guest post, or if they have a directory that they’d list you in.

What’s good for your reader is good for search

We are in an unprecedented era of human-driven search behavior. It’s not simply the search engines that have shifted; it’s the way your audience is searching for your services.

Building an AI SEO framework around the buyer journey with clarity around the solutions you offer and why you are the top expert in your field is what will move the needle as we continue to move forward into the AI search experience. This cohesive message that starts with your website, and reaches all touchpoints across the web, will tell an irrefutable story that AI search engines can’t ignore.
