A man has suffered serious injuries after a crash on the A1, with the road set to remain closed for the “rest of the day”. Two lorries crashed and later caught fire on the A1 near Stibbington just before 3am today (Tuesday, July 28).

Two men were taken to hospital for further treatment. One man suffered serious injuries, while the other man suffered minor injuries.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 2.50am today, with reports of a collision on the A1 near Wansford. Officers, ambulance and fire went to the scene. The road was closed.

“Two men have gone to hospital for treatment, one sustained serious injuries and the other minor injuries. Officers remain on the scene to deal with tailbacks and vehicle recovery. One southbound lane will remain closed due to possible resurfacing work.”

The police have also warned drivers that the A1 between the A1139 Fletton Parkway and A47 at Wansford is likely to remain closed for the “rest of the day”. The police spokesperson added: “The A15 from Hampton/Yaxley towards the A1 is also heavily congested. Please choose an alternative route where possible.”

The East of England Ambulance Service also attended the scene. An ambulance spokesperson said: “We were called shortly before 3am with reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 Great North Road in Stibbington, involving two lorries.

“Three ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were dispatched to the scene. Two patients were transported to hospital for further care.”

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue arrived to find the lorries “well alight”. A fire spokesperson added: “Crews from Dogsthorpe, Stanground, the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade, a water carrier from Ramsey, and a crew from Stamford in Lincolnshire were called to a lorry fire on the A1 Northbound between Fletton Parkway and Wansford.

“Firefighters arrived to find a collision involving two lorries, and they were both well alight. Wearing breathing apparatus, they used hose reels to extinguish the fire. The carriageway was closed so crews could carry out their work and so the lorries could be recovered and moved away from the carriageway.”
