Two people have been taken to hospital after an A1 crash. Emergency services were called to the crash involving two lorries on the A1 near Stibbington just before 3am today (Tuesday, July 28).

The lorries also caught fire. The East of England Ambulance Service took two people to hospital.

An ambulance spokesperson said: “We were called shortly before 3am with reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 Great North Road in Stibbington, involving two lorries. Three ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were dispatched to the scene. Two patients were transported to hospital for further care.”

Firefighters also attended the scene this morning. A fire spokesperson said: “At 2.50am today, crews from Dogsthorpe, Stanground, the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade, a water carrier from Ramsey, and a crew from Stamford in Lincolnshire were called to a lorry fire on the A1 Northbound between Fletton Parkway and Wansford.

“Firefighters arrived to find a collision involving two lorries, and they were both well alight. Wearing breathing apparatus, they used hose reels to extinguish the fire. The carriageway was closed so crews could carry out their work and so the lorries could be recovered and moved away from the carriageway.”

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said this morning just before 9.30am: "Please be aware the A1 Northbound is closed at Haddon services due to an RTC on the A1 near Sibson in the early hours of the morning. This is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day due to damage to the road surface, and there are significant tailbacks prior to Junction 17 of the A1. The A15 from Hampton/Yaxley towards the A1 is also heavily congested. Please choose an alternative route where possible."
