North Wales Live readers have been voicing their opinions on proposals for a new Aldi outlet in North Wales, with views divided over its location, potential high street consequences, and whether it addresses local requirements. Some prefer the site to remain undeveloped, others welcome increased competition and reduced costs, while many contend an alternative location would be more appropriate.

Aldi has lodged proposals for a new outlet on Anglesey. The German discount retailer has submitted an application for a new 1,788sqm shop on the outskirts of Menai Bridge.

The town's sole existing supermarket on the Menai Strait is an upmarket Waitrose, which launched in 2010.

According to the proposal, the new supermarket would be positioned at the Four Crosses Business Park at the junction of the A5025 and B5420.

Aldi described it as "an opportunity for a new store to benefit the local area and provide residents with a better, affordable shopping experience".

The company anticipates that while some Waitrose shoppers may switch, the existing store would maintain strong trading performance.

A retail impact assessment commissioned by Aldi concluded: "Due to its geographical proximity to the application site, we estimate that the proposal will divert approximately £1m of its convenience turnover from the out-of-centre Waitrose in the Menai Bridge settlement at 2029. Again, Table 15 at Appendix I shows that Waitrose will continue to trade at approximately 40.8% above its company average benchmark even with the proposed Aldi implemented at 2029."

Cymruamdim asks: "What about Caernarfon? No Aldi or Lidl. Most towns in North Wales seem to have an Aldi or a Lidl (most towns have both)! It was pretty much the same with Caernarfon having no bypass (until very recently). Why is this?"

ThePickledLiver replies: "It's already got an Asda, Home Bargains, what's left of a Morrisons and a Tesco. And any gaps in Caernarfon's market can be filled by one of the six MiniMarts, surely?"

HoorahHenry1 says: "Surely the Toffs in MB don’t need an Aldi. How dare Aldi for even thinking of bringing their dross over the bridge."

FlintshireIan writes: "Aldi has some good stuff. The steaks are particularly good, and they do some very good wine offers."

Kinaston adds: "So yet another supermarket, causing high street business failure and providing food of questionable quality. Maybe open a small store in the town rather than follow the model that depletes high street business."

Indigodebz says: "I very much doubt a Lidl will do harm if anything will bring more footfall to the high street. I don’t think the Lidl across the cob from Conwy had done anything negative to Conwy, perhaps the opposite."

Edward James writes: "More likely to impact the Co-Op and the other shop in Llanfairpwll than anything in Menai Bridge."

Taterdamalion believes: "The issue with introducing affordable retail outlets is that it tends to draw in less desirable individuals, which in turn degrades the overall atmosphere of the community."

While over on our Facebook page, Aled W R comments: "There are 2 within 6 miles of the proposed development. Surely one in the North of Sir Fôn would be more beneficial to the community. Didn't planning get refused for Môn Storage just a 100 yards away?"

Jennie M writes: "Amlwch have been crying out for one there ...which would make more sense."

Jan G asks: "Can we have an M&S food hall and Waitrose at Holyhead retail park, please? It's crying out for it."

Angela P agrees: "This should be going to Amlwch the people need it. There’s one in Bangor and llangefni. The traffic is bad as it is without this coming."
